Oscoda Michigan
is a small town in Northeast Michigan where tourism is the major industry. It’s located on the northern side of the Au Sable River where it enters Lake Huron. (“Along the Sunrise Side.”) The town of Au Sable is located on the other side of the river. These pristine waters were once the home of the Chippewa Indians, until the first French settlers arrived in the 1830s. The Frenchmen set up trading posts along the banks of the Au Sable River (meaning “All Sand,”) and along with the great lumber boom of the 1880s, civilization was brought to the Oscoda area. There is a Lumberman’s Monument in town, and a Canoe Memorial, to honor those who traversed the mighty Au Sable River. Once the home of the Wurtsmith Air Force Base, from 1923 to 1993, the 2000 census reported the town’s population to be only 992, but that number swells in summertime when tourists come to stay for a few days, a week, a month or longer. Located within Iosco County, which means “Water of Light,” the town of Oscoda is just an hour north of the city of Saginaw, and offers a quiet retreat for those looking to escape city life. It sits on the edge of the Huron National Forest and a park with over 1,000 feet of Lake Huron shoreline in located within the city limits. This park also features a new band shell, an open-air pavilion, a large playground, picnic tables and grills and a lighted boardwalk. The town of Oscoda has excellent schools, medical facilities, restaurants and shopping, and has a very low crime rate. The area surrounding Oscoda has become known as one of Michigan’s premier fishing spots, and all types of other outdoor recreation abound here as well. It is also home to a beautiful golf resort overlooking Lake Huron that offers 56 holes of golf and is designed to resemble the seaside golf courses of Scotland.
Oscoda has four distinct seasons. Spring temperatures are moderate with mild days and chilly nights; summers are warm and humid. Autumn is a beautiful time of year with lots of colorful fall foliage, warm days and cool nights. Winters are cold with plenty of snow for outdoor activities such as cross country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and ice-skating.
Oscoda offers a large amount of vacation rentals; homes, condos, apartments and cottages. Many feature outstanding views of Lake Huron, private beaches or access to the lake. You can also find real estate available for everything from luxurious waterfront homes, hunting cabins, commercial property and vacant land. The town of Oscoda has full service real estate companies that offer friendly, professional service. Whether you are looking for a rental, or considering a move, Oscoda’s real estate agents can provide valuable opinions and real estate consulting. The median home value in the area is $69,900, which is lower than the national average. For those looking for the peace and quiet of the country, yet not too far from the conveniences and amenities of a city, Oscoda is a perfect place to purchase a permanent home, or a second home.
